This Sunday, the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) opened Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose, a unique retrospective to celebrate the groundbreaking publication’s tenth anniversary.
The San Francisco-based magazine was founded in 2005 by artists Attaboy and Annie Owens, and since then has remained firmly committed to covering the most influential, genre-challenging creations. Always with an eye to budding talent, Hi-Fructose has itself played a key role bringing many new artists to public attention. No surprise, then, that the exhibitors list reads like a who’s who of the contemporary scene.
Turn the Page: The First Ten Years of Hi-Fructose features work by 51 artists who have appeared in Hi-Fructose during its ten year history, including a significant number of names from Colección SOLO. Pop surrealist pioneers such as Ron English, Tim Biskup and Gary Taxali are joined by newer names such as Sam Gibbons and AJ Fosik. James Jean is also showing, along with the Chilean artist Victor Castillo, while Jean-Pierre Roy has created a brand new piece especially for the exhibition.
Upon closing at MOCA on 31 December 2016, the exhibition will travel to the Akron Art Museum, Ohio (10 February – 7 May, 2017) and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento (June 11 – September 17, 2017).
