The neon-infused universe of Hideyuki Katsumata arrives to Colección SOLO with the recent acquisition of six new pieces by the Tokyo-based artist. Katsumata’s trademark monsters are present in Zombie Painter, while Amaterasu, Freedom of Expression and Cherry Blossom reflect the Japanese creator’s skill at combining spiritual references, traditional symbols and pop culture colour choices. These contrast with the starkly black and white Guardian Deity of One’s Birthplace, while Hanuata, a recurring character in Katsumata’s work for over a decade, is the protagonist of Running for my Life.
Katsumata joins a growing number of Japanese artists within Colección SOLO. The Last Supper, by the pioneer of Japanese pop art, Keiichi Tanaami, is particularly noteworthy, as are the three pieces by fine artist and gaming world legend Yoshitaka Amano: Sortie, Candy Girl S-23 and Candy-Girl S-36. Newer faces include the illustrator and character designer Akinori Oishi and skate culture’s recycling hero, Haroshi. In short, some of the most significant figures in Japanese, and global, contemporary art.
