The first UK museum exhibition by Brooklyn artist, KAWS, is taking place this spring at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, an outstanding open-air museum in the north of England. Permanent home to large-scale works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Jaume Plensa, among many others, the park’s historically designed landscape has been transformed by KAWS’s immediately recognisable characters.
The exhibition features over 20 works: commanding sculptures in bronze, fibreglass, aluminium and wood alongside large, bright canvases immaculately rendered in acrylic paint – some created especially for the show. In characteristic KAWS style, the pieces sample familiar cartoons or brand mascots with humour and poignancy. Trademark figures with scull and crossbones heads or X-ed eyes appear alongside new paintings featuring shadowy, enigmatic forms.
YSP describes KAWS work as “an exciting, intelligent and contemporary response to the world we live in and the imagery that surrounds us.” That’s an opinion shared by Colección SOLO, which is why Companion has formed part of our collection since 2015.
