Colección SOLO delves into the fictional worlds of Belgian artist Rinus Van de Velde with the acquisition of three large-scale charcoal drawings. There is a Drawback, However, All the Rest Feels Like a Waste of Time and Please Pay Attention Please are recent works in Van de Velde’s characteristic style, combining photograph-like imagery and captions to draw viewers into faux-documentary narratives.

Van de Velde is one of Belgium’s rising art stars. His work has been shown worldwide, including at museum venues in Spain and Brazil, and this Saturday SMAK Ghent will be opening Donogoo Tonka, a major solo exhibition featuring specially created installations and new drawings. Visitors have until June to discover what the museum describes as a blend of “cutting irony, thorough research, visual intelligence, a free imagination and great sensitivity.”
